$6 Billion Valuation: Mittal Family-Backed Consortium in Talks for Strategic Liverpool Stake

Anfield could be on the verge of welcoming significant new investment.

According to an explosive report by the Financial Times, a consortium of investors led by businessman Amit Bhatia and backed by the billionaire Mittal family is in active negotiations with Fenway Sports Group (FSG) to acquire a substantial minority stake in Liverpool Football Club.

If finalized, the transaction would value the Merseyside club at more than $6 billion (£4.6 billion+) making it one of the highest valuations for a sports franchise in global history.

Who is Behind the Investment Group?

The investor group is headed by Amit Bhatia, the son-in-law of steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal.

Bhatia is a familiar face in English football, having previously served as chairman and co-owner of Queens Park Rangers. In preparation for the potential Liverpool deal, Bhatia has agreed to transfer his entire shareholding in QPR to majority owner Ruben Gnanalingam to ensure compliance with multi-club ownership rules.

The Mittal family has been expanding its sports portfolio globally, having also secured a minority stake in the Indian Premier League's Rajasthan Royals.

FSG Breaks Silence: Official Confirmation

Unusually for mid-negotiation rumors, Fenway Sports Group explicitly confirmed the group's interest directly to the Financial Times.

FSG Statement: "An investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club."

Sources close to the negotiations emphasize that while talks are active, no agreement has been formally signed yet and negotiations remain ongoing.

What This Means for Liverpool

  1. No Ownership Change: FSG control under John W. Henry will remain firmly intact. Like previous minority deals such as Dynasty Equity's $200m entry in 2023 this is structured purely as a strategic capital influx.
  2. Financial Muscle: Fresh capital provides FSG with added liquidity for infrastructure, debt management, and squad investment without taking on high-interest leverage.
  3. Global Growth: Partnering with the Mittal network opens up unprecedented commercial avenues in major global growth markets.
