Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has delivered a highly pragmatic and refreshing assessment of how the club plans to navigate its post-Mohamed Salah future.
In a wide-ranging interview, the newly appointed boss discussed the near-impossible task of directly replacing a legend, introduced fans to his highly rated new arrivals Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Munōz, and mapped out his blueprint for immediate success at Anfield.
1. The Salah Conundrum: "We Are Preparing Him to Fail"
With Mohamed Salah's departure leaving a colossal void in Liverpool's frontline, the loudest question of the summer has been how the club will replace his legendary goalscoring output.
Iraola was refreshingly candid on the matter, warning that trying to find a direct, like-for-like copy is a recipe for disaster:
I think we cannot expect to sign a winger that is going to like replace Mo Salah because otherwise we are preparing him to fail almost. I think obviously we need someone in that area but probably will have different skills. He can maybe complement the team in another way and we are working on it definitely.
Rather than searching for a clone of Salah, Iraola's plan focuses on restructuring the attack. Liverpool will look to sign a winger with a different profile who can unlock opponents in new ways, shifting the goalscoring burden onto a more collective, balanced front three.
2. On New Signings: Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Munōz
Iraola was also full of praise for the fresh faces entering the AXA Training Centre this pre-season, highlighting his familiarity with both prospects.
Jeremy Jacquet: Ready to Go
The highly-rated French defender, secured in a £60m deal from Rennes, has reported for pre-season fully recovered from his previous shoulder issues.
Jeremy was a player I knew very well even before signing for Liverpool. I think he has all the tools that we will need for that position. He’s fully fit and ready to go.
Victor Munōz: Humble but Ambitous
Munōz, who became the first official signing of the Iraola era after Liverpool triggered his £34.5m (40m) release clause from Osasuna, is arriving with a booming reputation. The versatile winger has been representing Spain on the global stage and fits Iraola’s tactical ideals perfectly.
Victor also is a player I know very well. He can play both wings and I think he has the tools, the mentality when I talk to the player I like, no, it’s still humble but ambitious and I think he’s going to be a very good addition for us.
3. Redefining Success: "My Focus is on Building a Team"
When asked about what a successful first year on Merseyside would look like, Iraola didn't throw out bold trophy promises. Instead, he chose to focus on the process of rising to meet Liverpool's historical expectations.
I think it’s not from my side to tell it... I know the expectations here are an expectations of a big clubs and right now my focus is on building a team. To answer to those expectations, on trying to maximise every players that we already have and how to get them to even better spot that they already are and try to build something collective that can give us titles.
By prioritizing individual player development and collective unity, Iraola is laying down a long-term foundation designed to deliver exactly what the Anfield faithful expect: wins, silverware, and an exciting brand of football.
